A new weather radar could begin operating in December at Beira International Airport. The new infrastructure will replace the weather reporting device destroyed when tropical cyclone Idai struck the city in March 2019 and destroyed several public and private infrastructures.

The fact was made known by the general director of the National Institute of Meteorology (INAM), Adérito Aramuge, who also revealed that a 12-meter high tower is already under construction, where the instrument will be installed by November.

According to the source cited by the newspaper Notícias, for the acquisition and installation of the new radar, produced in Finland, the African Development Bank (ADB) disbursed 126 million meticais.

"Radar has the ability to detect quantities of droplets suspended in the atmosphere. It is a device that works on the basis of new technologies and simultaneously emits frequencies horizontally and vertically," he explained.
