Manhiça is once again a "stage" for blood

The district of Manhiça, Maputo province, continues to be the "stage" for bloodshed due to the high number of traffic accidents that occur there. Awareness-raising efforts by both government entities and civil society are intensifying, but the results are slow to appear.

In less than ten hours, the district registered two traffic accidents. One resulted in the death of one person, six seriously injured and 12 lightly injured, and the other caused five minor injuries, major property damage, and the driver fled.

Data from the Ministry of Transport and Communications, contained in a press release, indicate the occurrence of 494 traffic accidents in the first half of this year alone, which resulted in 434 deaths, that is, in every accident there is a death.

Last Saturday, at around 5 pm, there was a crash and rollover accident in a vehicle designed to transport cargo, but carrying passengers. According to authorities, the driver was intoxicated.

Yesterday, the Manhiça district again recorded a traffic accident involving a semi-collective passenger transport, which is suspected to have crashed and overturned, resulting in five minor injuries, this time the driver was on the run.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications also mentions that it is taking several actions to curb the occurrence of traffic accidents, one of which is the revision of the Highway Code, regulation of transport by car and trailers, and other legislation with a view to increasing penalties for road traffic and reorganizing the licensing of transport activity.
