Lurdes Mutola honored today

The former Mozambican athlete, Maria de Lurdes Mutola, is being honored today in Eugene, Oregon, USA, by the International Athletics Federation (IAAF) as part of the World Championships of Athletics to be held in that country.

According to the Notícias newspaper, Lurdes Mutola will be decorated by the organization of the event as part of an initiative called Oregon22 Heritage Trail, which aims to recognize 22 athletes in their hometowns or in places that have a special meaning for an athlete, with the unveiling of plaques in these locations.

And it was precisely in the small town of Eugene, a small place, but with great tradition in athletics, where Lurdes Mutola settled in 1991 and grew up for athletics, and projected herself to stardom at the planetary level, with great achievements and records.

Mutola was Olympic 800-meter champion in Sydney-2000 and bronze medalist in Atlanta-96, as well as a three-time and seven-time world indoor track champion, in addition to several continental, Diamond League, and multiple Meeting titles.
