The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, had a telephone interaction yesterday, lasting more than thirty minutes, with his counterpart from the Republic of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.
A press release received by "Notícias" states that the telephone contact served for the President of Ukraine to inform the Mozambican Head of State about the situation of Russia's military intervention in that country.
Zelensky also congratulated Mozambique on its election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and expressed interest in explaining the security situation to African countries in an appropriate forum and using the opportunity to address economic and trade aspects.
For his part, the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, thanked Zelensky for the detailed information he provided. He expressed regret and solidarity for the loss of more than ten thousand human lives, destruction of infrastructure, and for the more than twelve million displaced people.
Nyusi explained the position of abstention taken by Mozambique in relation to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine as a position arising from the Constitution of the Republic and foreign policy, which advocate the solution of differences through dialogue.
He also explained that Mozambique upholds respect for International Humanitarian Law, human rights, and the protection of victims of war and armed conflict.
The President thanked Ukraine for expressing its confidence in Mozambique through its vote for non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council, and assumed its responsibility to work for peace and security in the world.
He welcomed Ukraine's desire to speak to African countries about the prevailing situation and address economic aspects with the African continent.
The Mozambican statesman emphasized his encouragement to Ukraine and Russia to return to direct dialogue and, with humility, seek a different solution to the war, even though it is not an internal conflict between the parties involved.
The two statesmen exchanged thanks for the contact, which they considered promising, and President Nyusi reiterated Mozambique's willingness to do everything in its power to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
The two leaders also pledged to consult and support each other in the performance of their duties and in the need to ensure international security.
