Less than 24 hours after the ordeal in the House of Representatives, the President of the United States signed into law on Saturday a bill, agreed to by Democrats and Republicans, that restricts conditions on access to firearms throughout the country.ís.
According to RTP, the new legislation, called S. 2938: Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and concurred in by a bipartisan committee chaired by Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn, tightens background checks, including by merchants, and bans gun trafficking.
It facilitates checks by allowing, for example, access, for the first time, to information about violent crimes committed by young people.
It also prohibits the possession of firearms by people convicted of domestic violence, or who are considered a danger to themselves and others due to, for example, mental problems.
It also provides funding for various security programs including school-level or "red flag" programs that aim to take guns away from individuals deemed dangerous and for campaigns to disarm society.
It provides no ban on the sale of assault weapons or large capacity cartridges, in a defeat for Democratic claims.
The new law was passed this Friday by 234 votes to 193, with 14 Republican representatives joining the Democrats in weighing in.
Biden enacted the legislation in the Roosevelt Room at the White House alongside first lady Jill Biden, and revealed that he will chair a gathering of gun violence victims in July to mark the signing of the new legislation.
"Their message was to do something...today we did," the US President said.
The new Bipartisan Law comes just weeks after 19 children and two teachers were killed in the May 24 mass shooting at a Texas elementary school.
The attacker was a young man flagged for behavioral and social problems who had just turned 18 by obtaining permission to acquire firearms.
The security forces' response to the incident is under scrutiny as it was deemed too slow.
