"Election to the Security Council demonstrates prestige and credibility of our country"

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo Dlhovu, said that Mozambique's selection as a Non-Permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unequivocally demonstrates the prestige and credibility of our country in the international community.

Macamo made this statement to the press yesterday, moments after the election, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, United States of America.

"The election is the result of the vision and leadership of the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, who, as helmsman of Mozambican diplomacy, guided the timely decision making on the candidacy and all subsequent actions until the vote," stressed the minister.

Quoted by the newspaper Notícias, Verónica Macamo also said that Mozambique was chosen because of the objectives and priorities it conceived as a contribution to the United Nations body, which watches over international peace and security.

"The Mozambican government has defined as a fundamental objective of its membership in the Security Council to contribute in the common and global effort to promote, build and maintain peace and security," he recalled.

Thus, among other priorities, the country will seek to strengthen multilateralism and prioritize ongoing dialogue and peaceful resolution of conflicts to achieve lasting and sustainable peace; contribute to combating security threats, including terrorism, violent extremism, maritime piracy, drug and human trafficking; as well as strengthen the global response to the effects of climate change.

Macamo thanked all the countries that voted for Mozambique and promised that Mozambique will seek to meet the expectations of the international community, while recognizing that the responsibilities in the concert between nations are increased.

It should be noted that the other candidates for Non-Permanent Members, namely Japan, representing the Asia and Pacific Group; Ecuador, for Latin America and the Caribbean; Malta and Switzerland, for the Western European Group, were also elected. Of these, only Mozambique and Switzerland will be joining the UN Security Council for the first time.
