The Democratic Movement of Mozambique, MDM, the third largest political force in the country, says that Filipe Nyusi's attempt for a third presidential term violates the Constitution and represents a threat to the process of building democracy.
According to RFI, the reaction of the MDM comes after last weekend, the youth organization of FRELIMO, had expressed at its second congress, support for Filipe Nyusi for another five years as president of the party and that by tradition is also the presidential candidate of the political formation.
The possibility of the current head of state Filipe Nyusi running for a third presidential term is condemned by the country's second largest opposition party.
Lutero Simango, president of the MDM stresses that "the President of the Republic can only be re-elected once. Having this constitutional definition means that there is no chance, there is no possibility of a third term".
For Lutero Simango, the Constitution of the Mozambican Republic cannot be changed for the benefit of a group of citizens.
"If it is to change the constitutional order, the republican order, there has to be a referendum. The Mozambicans should be called to make their voices heard through the vote, saying yes or no," argued Simango.
The President of the MDM assured RFI that his party is already working to win the 2023 local elections and the 2024 general elections.
