New law requires restaurants to indicate calories on menus

Since April 6, restaurant chains, cafes and take-away restaurants have been required to detail the calorie counts of food and beverages on their menus.

This is a new rule in place in England, applicable to establishments with more than 250 employees. What's more, the calories of each food item will have to be listed, and menus or labels must also include the recommended daily requirement for adults and children.

The legislation, which was passed by the English parliament in May 2021, is part of the Government's strategy to combat obesity and wants to ensure that people can make healthier choices.

But the measure is generating controversy. Several fast food chains have expressed their disagreement with this rule.

Almost two-thirds - 63% - of adults in England are overweight or obese. One in three children are also overweight by the time they leave elementary school.
