The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that the first six weeks after the birth of a child are vital for mothers and babies.
For the WHO, the first 45 days after birth are crucial for ensuring maternal and child survival. It is also at this time that the baby needs support for its development and the mother for her mental health.
According to WHO data worldwide, 3 out of 10 pregnant women and babies go without postnatal care in the first days after delivery. It is during these days that most maternal and newborn deaths occur.
The physical and emotional consequences can be devastating when not managed, but the good news is that it is all treatable with the right care for the right time.
The WHO reminds that the birth of a child is a life-changing moment and quality care should be applied to strengthen both. "There is the joy, the love, the hope, but it is also a time of stress and anxiety for many."
The first six weeks of a newborn's life are critical for forming relationships and establishing behaviors that affect the child's life, long-term development, and health.
