The Chinese government is considering mediating in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine after remaining neutral in the first days of the Russian attacks and, in the same period, announcing trade cooperation with Moscow.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba. China condemned the Russian attacks, admitting it was a "war," and Ukraine called for mediation from Beijing, which is considering grabbing the role of mediator.
Kuleba assured that Ukraine is willing to strengthen communication with China and looks forward to "China's mediation for the realization of the ceasefire," according to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) statement.
Ukraine intends to take advantage of the level of relations between Beijing and Moscow to force Russia to halt armed aggression against the Ukrainian people.
"China is ready to make every effort to end the war on Ukrainian soil through diplomacy, including as a permanent member of the UN Security Council," assured the Ukrainian diplomat quoted by cnnportugal.
According to a statement published on the website of the Chinese MFA, Wang was "extremely concerned about the damage caused on civilians" by Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities. A warning that coincides with a mega-operation by the Chinese authorities to remove from Ukraine more than a thousand Chinese citizens living there who are no longer safe.
Moreover, the Chinese leader referred to the situation between the two countries as a "war", and stopped using the language of Moscow, which continues to refer to a "special military operation". Remember that until a few days ago China refused to use the words "war", "aggression", "violation" or "invasion" to classify what is happening in Eastern Europe.
