Hidden Debts: The seizure of assets of the 11 defendants postponed for the second time

The Maputo City Judicial Court postponed again this Thursday the beginning of the special adversarial session granted, following the preventive seizure of the assets of the defendants involved in the hidden debts case.

The court session was to be occupied by the debate on the seizure of assets of the 19 defendants implicated in the case that has damaged the state by more than $2.2 billion.

Last Monday, the session was also interrupted because not all lawyers had been notified of the documents about the assets of their constituents seized by the Public Prosecutor's Office that are believed to have been purchased with funds from Privinvest and which gave rise to the hidden debts.

It is about the just over 2.2 billion US dollars, from the biggest financial scandal that has culminated in the country's indebtedness.

Of the 19 defendants involved in the movement of that amount, the former director of Intelligence of the Intelligence and State Security Services, António Carlos do Rosário, stands out.

The defendant António Carlos do Rosário is said to have acquired several more plots, according to an order quoted by Radio Mozambique.

The document also points out the couple Gregório and Ângela Leão, as being holders of assets in their personal name and of the company Anlaba Investimentos, owned by them, in addition to the acquisition or construction of several properties.

The order points, for example, to the Leão couple buying numerous properties; plots, among other properties registered in the name of the brother and a subordinate of the defendant Gregório Leão.

The defendant Cipriano Mutota, on the other hand, is said to have purchased three properties in the 25 de Junho A and B neighborhoods, in Maputo City, as well as in the Marracuene district.

From the document in our possession, we also extracted that the defendant Teófilo Nhangumele is said to have bought a property in the Juba district, in the district of Boane, Maputo province, and apartments in the city of Maputo.

For his part, defendant Zulficar Ahmad is also listed in the document as having purchased a property on Mao-Tsé Tung Avenue in the nation's capital.

The defendant Armando Ndambi Guebuza, is said to have bought, among several assets, a property in one of the prime areas of Maputo city, and shares or a share in the company Focus 21, while his friend Bruno Langa is said to have purchased a property in the neighborhood Djuba, among other goods.

For the defendant Fabião Salvador Mabunda, the order points to the acquisition of a property in the Magoanine A neighborhood in the city of Maputo.

Meanwhile, the defendant Manuel Renato Matusse, is said to have acquired, according to the order, 15 plots, in the Romão neighborhood, a residence in Muzingane, in the Limpopo district of Gaza province, in addition to an apartment in Maputo city.

For its part, the defendant Maria Ines Moiane Ndove in addition to having purchased apartments, owns a hall of events, in the neighborhood of Mozal, in Maputo province.
