Mental Health: only 2% of budgets are DIRECTED to the area, says WHO

Today, October 10, is World Mental Health Day. The World Health Organization (WHO) says only 2% of governments' budgets are directed to mental health. However, the WHO, through its most recent report, acknowledges that there is increasing awareness of the disease.

WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus says that violations of the human rights of people with mental health problems remain quite common.

However, the World Health Assembly, held last May, had governments around the world recognizing the need to expand quality mental health services at all levels.

The UN agency celebrates the fact that a portion of these nations have already "found new ways to provide mental health care to their populations."

Therefore, today's date highlights national efforts and encourages the public to highlight positive stories of activities that help inspire others to value the issue.

The day was marked under the motto "Mental Health an Unequal World".
