Portugal's Minister of the Environment and Climate Action begins a visit to Mozambique tomorrow, with projects valued at 2 million euros at the cooperation level.
João Pedro Matos Fernandes mentioned that during this visit he will participate in a donor conference for water, in which he will announce Portugal's willingness to support with one million euros, over the next three years.
"These are projects in the area of water supply, to be developed by Portuguese companies, the minister said. "What will be defined is that in each November of these three years, Mozambique will say what it wants to do in the following year," he added.
The minister will also celebrate two projects in the area of nature conservation: 150,000 euros for the Maputo elephant reserve, conducted by the Mozambican Parks and Reserves Service, and 150,000 euros for the recovery of the Marromeu mangroves, under the responsibility of the Gorongosa Park.
Already next year, the Portuguese government will finance, with 280 thousand euros, the second phase of local adaptation plans, and a project, whose value is not yet fully defined, for the reforestation of African mahogany.
João Matos Fernandes recalled that in 2017, when the Environmental Fund began, Portugal expressed its intention to finance projects in Portuguese-speaking African Countries (PALOP) to the tune of 10 million euros. In 2021 the value was exceeded reaching 11.5 million euros.
Of this 11.5 million Euros, 1.8 million has been invested in Mozambique, until the end of 2020, in water supply, mainly in Maputo.
